Link Project Proposal

For my internship I am working at Los Alamos in New
Mexico. At various types of research nuclear physics, biological research,
climate science, ect. The mission of Los
Alamos is supporting nuclear deterrence, reducing global threats, and fostering
energy security. The role of Los Alamos in the international community is to monitor
the location of nuclear weapons around the world.
My mentor is Jan Frigo who is a research and development
engineer. My mentor has been working at Los Alamos for 19 years. My mentor
works with computing science and robotics for science education. My mentor can
offer me her knowledge as a robotics and computing engineer. I can offer my mentor
my willingness to learn and help out.
I came to intern at Los Alamos because my mom was friends
with my mentor and I thought that this would be a good experience for me. My
academic/career goal for this internship is to acquire experience in robotics
and other research fields. It will help me achieve my academic and career goals
by helping me have a larger knowledge base moving forward to college.
For my project I am making a game using a mind storm
robot Lego kit for a class that I am helping teaching as part of my internship.
It will help my mentor because it will be used as an example for the class that
I am helping teach as part of my internship. It is relevant to me because I
enjoy working with Legos and teaches me engineering skills because there are
very few guidelines for this project and I have to define what I want the
project to be.
In preparation for my link project I have researched some
of the things that you can build with the kit so see if any of the designs
would be useful in my project. A skill that I have developed more for this
project is problem because when designing the game and robot everything will
not work perfectly the first time and I will need to know how to correct it.
To make this project successful I will first need to
decide what kind of game I want to make, what the rules will be, and what role
the robot will play in it. After that I will gather the materials that are
required. For materials I will probably need the mindstorm kit, white foam
board, card board, tooth picks, markers, ect.
For my internship process the main challenge will be
figuring out what I want to do for the project because there is so much that I
could do. The main way that I have overcome this is by picking out a project
that is involves something that I am interested in and is hepful to the place
that I am doing my internship at.
